After being turned back at Clancy’s in Linden Hills (who runs out of bread at a place that is touted for delicious sandwiches? Especially when Great Harvest is practically across the street from you?), I made my roommate, James, make the trek to Bubble Me, the new place in between Game Stop and Stella’s on Lake Street in Uptown.
I had heard only two things about Bubble Me. Good Bahn Mi, and Cheap. Two for two, as far as I’m concerned. My brother had turned me on to bahn mi sandwiches, which he apparently scours Philadelphia for, so I was excited to give these a go. In lay man’s terms, a bahn mi is a Vietnamese sandwich, served in a baguette-type roll, and filled with (generally) meat, (often pickled) carrots and daikon, cilantro, chili peppers and a sauce.
As you can see above, the Bubble Me version fits the mold. It had both pork and mock duck as the protein, pickled daikon, carrots, a heavy serving of cilantro, and well as cucumbers, chili peppers and a spicy mayonnaise-like sauce.
The bread played a little too prominent of a role, in my opinion, but otherwise the flavor profiles were great. The freshness of the cilantro, the bite from the peppers and sauce, the vinegary tang from the daikon, and the crunch of the cucumbers and carrots. All in a handy roll of bread.
James didn’t like his, so I scored two of these. Since Bubble Me stays open until 2 a.m., and they serve a $5 pad thai, I definitely see a return trip in my future.
